Yep, those were some happy holidays

We had a pretty awesome time this holiday season - with nearly two weeks of "vacation time" off from school and work. On Christmas Eve we traveled to Orlando where we spent the holiday with Grandma Roth, Poppy Dave, Aunt Tina, Uncle Mark, McKayla, Mariah and Alayna. Needless to say, the boys had a GREAT time with their cousins, who are champion babysitters and playmates. On Christmas Day we floated down the lazy river and jumped in the pools, opened presents, and had a big turkey dinner with [Great] Aunt Tonia and Uncle Gerb, who drove over from St. Augustine for the day.

The day after Christmas, we went to DisneyWorld along with a gazillion other people (including the Morris family) and the kids got their first taste of the magical place. Highlights were It's a Small World, the Country Bear Jamboree, the teacups, and the Jungle Cruise. Arlo got to sit with his cousins front and center for the Christmastime Parade, which is quite an elaborate production. Magnus danced and danced to the music and was in good spirits all day - he enjoyed it a lot more than I thought possible for a one year old! The lines were long and crowds were thick, but we made it through most of the day and made some good memories.

We also got to visit Gatorland on our last day in Orlando, which was a highlight for Sam, I think. They had lots of gators, birds, snakes, crocs, and hicks. Good stuff.

After we got back, we had several days of time to hang out with friends here in DC. We spent a wonderful new years' eve with a big group of friends, kids and babies at the DC Marine Barracks where our friend Paul is the Commanding Officer. We stayed at their huge house all together and after [most of] the kids went to bed, we played mafia well into the night. We ate and drank and laughed and ate some more.

Now that it's a new year, time for some cleansing and returning to normal. Sam is in training for a few footraces and a triathlon in May so he's pretty disciplined about his routine. I'm just hoping to get back on the elliptical regularly again.

Furikake song

I just got a message from Sam about a song Arlo just made up. It's about Furikake, which is a Japanese mix of seaweed and sesame that gets sprinkled over rice to make it yummy. Arlo loves this stuff. (He's home sick but the rice is nice and easy on the tummy, so he had some for breakfast.)

The triathlon has now come and gone. It was really a lot of fun. Whitney deserves a big thank you for supporting me. She watched the kids while I was doing 12 weeks of early morning exercise, put up with hours of my research and incessant discussion of triathlon details, and was there to cheer me on. The race started with the swim. The bottom of the Choptank was sandy and smooth. I expected muck and other stuff. When the horn blew to start the race the wetsuit kept me on top of the water and I cruised on adrenaline for the first 400 yards. Then I had to swim. It was harder to spot the course marking bouys than I anticipated. People were veering all over the place. I had to muscle a couple of people out of the way who were crossing my bow. I kept it steady and came out of the water 11th. Luckily, I didn't get stung by jellyfish. One guy in the changing tent was complaining that he got stung all over his face.The first transition was smooth. I didn't fall over taking off the wetsuit, which I did in practice. I got on the bike and felt good, at least at the beginning. About three miles in, on open road, it started to drizzle a little. I was going as fast as I could, which wasn't very fast. I got passed by a couple people and that motivated me not to let others pass. Around mile 10 my legs were burning and me seat got really uncomfortable. That's when I had to start to endure. Its also when I got passed by a few others as I took a drink and adjusted my position. The last mile and half I felt better as I knew it was almost over and the second transition was coming. I was the 27th fastest biker with an average speed of 17.7. Lots of room for improvement there.The run transition was easy. I just took off my bike helmet and started running. My legs needed a little while to get going because I got so tight on the bike. I slowly sped up as my legs stretched out. but never got going very fast. I got passed by a few and passed a couple of people myself. One Navy cadet passed me saying "good job sir." Coming into the finish I looked back and saw a lady coming so I started to speed up. Right at the finish I forgot about her and she caught me. Grrrr. I've learned that's called getting "chicked," when a woman passes you at the finish. Won't happen next time. My run was respectable, the 16th fastest with 8:23 minute miles. Overall, according to unofficial results I finished 12th of 70, 8th of 32 men. I was surprised I did that well in my first one. The hours of training paid off. Even more surprising was that the swim was my best sport. I've never swam in my life till last May. Now I have winter to train and plan for the next race. I've heard and now experienced that triathlons are addictive. I might be hooked after one.

Almost fall: School, focus, teeth and training

Another little family update. Week two for Arlo in his new school. It's been a short week since we had the labor day holiday and a visit to the dentist. He's still unhappy when I drop him off but the teachers report he gets over it pretty quickly once I am out of sight. By the time Sam gets there to pick him up he's perfectly happy and engaged - Dad's appearances at the door are like a happy surprise every time.

The dentist visit is a follow up to his first visit. He's unfortunately got several cavities. In retrospect, our liberal use of milk at bedtime (after brushing teeth) has come back to bite us (haha). Even though we never give him candy, don't do lots of sweets, and diluted the juices, we weren't as diligent as we should've been with brushing. We're sad about him having to go through this experience at the dentist so early in life.

Magnus is really gaining ground. He's "speed crawling", cruising, and really into throwing things - balls, bottles, blocks, and whatever he can get his hands on. When he wants something he'll race over, grunting away, with the most focused look of intent you ever saw on a baby. This is especially true when he wants mom or dad - he races over and yells at you to pick him up. Determined little red.

Sam's on the final countdown - just over two weeks - to his first triathalon. It's a sprint race called "Chesapeake Man" and he's been working hard getting ready for it. He's pretty determined too - I envy his dedication to preparing, and how motivated he is by this new pasttime.

Me? Just working away, lamenting the fact that the pool closed for the summer, but getting excited for the cooler weather, halloween, and fall birthdays. Hope you're all enjoying the first taste of fall where you are!

School: Day Four

Today was Arlo's fourth day of school and the afternoon report was a good one - hooray! He's had a hard time with the transitions in the morning (being left behind by mom has not gone easily) but today, after we'd been there a while, he got so engrossed in the morning circle that he didn't notice me tiptoeing out the door. Circle time includes songs and dancing - they go around and greet each friend and that kid gets the chance to dance, if they want to, inside the circle. By the time they'd greeted six kids I realized he was no longer paying attention to where mom was and I slipped out. When Sam picked him up this afternoon, he was in a good mood and even hugged and kissed one of his teachers on the way out the door. He's in a good mood and singing and telling stories from class, as has been the case all week.

We really like his class, his teachers, and the principal at the school. They are understanding, caring, smart and fun. I think this is the start of something good...

A rite of passage today - Arlo started school. He is in Mr. Henderson's class with several of his friends, and although he was reluctant at first, he seemed to get right with the program. By the time we each left, he wasn't looking for us anymore. We're really proud of him and love his new school, which is a brand new public charter school in our neighborhood. Hoping he loves it too. School Preparation

Well, it's starting to sink in that school is going to start soon. Arlo will attend pre-K at a charter school in our neighborhood with two other friends, Jack and Archer. We've been gathering the necessities - glue and crayons, the uniform, paperwork and even a visit to the dentist. Tomorrow I will see the school for the first time but Sam and Arlo visited last week and he's excited at the concept of school even though he doesn't know quite what that means. The program is full time - m-f and most of the day, with a nap in the middle. There's a Spanish language immersion and the school has Latin classes and foreign travel as a component of the lessons in higher grades. We're optimistic that it will go well but know it will be a big adjustment for all of us.

In preparation Arlo and Sam got haircuts today and they've got a visit to the dentist on Friday. I think he'll do great.

Weddings, reunions, and summertime trips

Sam and I have been together for more than ten years, and we've been married under DC's common law for about half of that time. We have been through a lot of things together, but we never did get around to having that wedding ceremony. Somehow, we came around to the idea that it would be fun to have a ceremony and celebrate with our friends and family. Boy, was it ever! We invited a few people up to my parent's home on Torch Lake, MI, for a July 30th celebration. With a pretty minimalist budget and enlisting the talents and help of my mom, we were able to have a lovely little event on the lake with lots of home cooked food, vintage plates and homemade details, water skiing, tubing, pontoon rides, and sunshine galore. We took full advantage of the local food and beverage scene - local beer from Shorts brewery, sausages and crab cakes from Sonny's on Torch, L. Mawby Vineyards sparkling wine, fresh flowers from the farmers' market in Elk Rapids, fruit pies from a local baker, Brownwood Cherry Butter, fresh cherries and blueberries, jalepenos from the garden...The weather was perfect, Cooper the dog led us down the aisle to Johnny and June, and the day landed in a perfect sunset.

May 2011 Update

Magnus and Arlo are both developing so fast, each in their own space. We just enjoyed a quick look back to Fall 2008 and Winter 2009 to see what Arlo was up to at this point and it seems Magnus is pretty close to "on track" with his big brother, or just a little bit slower. He's now got a pretty good grasp on sitting up, he grabs for everything within reach, puts it in his mouth, then tosses it aside and moves on to the next thing. Faces and smiles are particular favorites to grab for. He LOVES getting kisses and smiles from ear to ear if you lavish him with little pecks. He's ticklish, laughs at toe nibbles, reaches out for us and gives big hugs when we pick him up. He's constantly babbling "daddadadada" and "hmmmmmmm". Mag is enjoying the solid foods - pears, bananas, carrots, broccoli, prunes. He tried a teething biscuit the other day and loved it so we need to get those in the mix. He's going to sleep pretty much on his own (usually with a little crying but it dies down fast) and still spits up but that seems more related to a current cold he's got since it had subsided for some time. Toe grabbing, seems to be teething, rubs back of his head when he's tired, doesn't want to be alone much but loves the bumbo. He and Fluf are buddies.

Arlo is nearly 3 - 1 week countdown! Today he asked Sam if he could go look in the window well in the driveway for praying mantises - that's where they had found several LAST YEAR, and he remembered it on his own. Pretty amazing that he can reach back that far in his memory! He's an "attached" kid, really happy when he's close with us, but also seems to be getting bored easily and then takes on a more devious mentality. Those times, he is pesky with his brother, gets an evil little laugh and does all the things he knows he shouldn't. He's also prone to some temper flare ups. Today, for example, he didn't get ENOUGH sorbet when I gave it to him and therefore decided he should dump it out on the floor. He then mashed it with the bowl and spoon, and rubbed it all over the floor. Luckily, it was the kitchen tile so once he'd calmed down about the whole thing I was able to just walk in and silently hand him a towel and he cleaned it all up himself too. He's in that funny stage where he can be so loving and sweet and cuddly and then turn on a dime and hit you over the head or find ways to push buttons you didn't even know you had.

People are really happy and inquisitive about Magnus's red hair. It's charming. Aside from the hair, he and Arlo look A LOT alike at this age. It's fun to look back and see that, cause Arlo has changed so much in 3 years it's hard to remember what each phase was like.

The boys are so lucky to be in the good hands of their dad all day, they don't know how fortunate they are! Their days are usually filled with playdates and play groups, soccer tots, the playground, backyard hanging out, lots of shared meals with our neighborhood friends, birthday parties and brunches on weekends, etc. We are really excited about the PG Pool which we've joined with several other families we hang out with in the neighborhood - they'll be able to play there almost every day if they want, enjoying the shade, big sandbox, climbing toys, kiddie pool, and other kids. We went to the opening party last weekend and are really looking forward to being there this summer after seeing how much our kids loved it and how instantly comfortable they were in that setting. I'm sure there will be ample posts in the near future about the pool...

In the meantime, look for a birthday update sometime soon.

Easter Festivities

We had a fun and busy Easter weekend...leading up to the weekend was an Easter Egg Hunt at the Marine Barracks DC. Our friends Paul and Sonja are the Commanding Officer and his wife, and they managed to commandeer the parade grounds for a great place to do the hunting. We enjoyed brunch and lots of visiting before we released the dogs to go out and find the gazillion hidden treasures all over the lawn. It was a lovely spring day with everything that blooms looking at its peak, and it was (as always) great to spend time with friends now that we have a slew of kiddos running around together. (Pictures coming)

Then on Easter weekend, Sam and the boys did some egg coloring over with our close neighbor friends here, Amanda, Liam and baby Reese. The boys seemed to like the egg coloring (video below) but I hear it was really Sam who got into it the most!

On Sunday the Easter Bunny came and hid the eggs in our yard which was a fun way for Arlo to wake up and get to work. He found them all and then got to check out his Easter basket and do some sampling. After that, we put on our [homemade!] hats and went to our neighbors, Tim and Sean's, for a "bonnet brunch" which consisted of lots of fabulous hats AND a fantastic and elaborate spread of food and mimosas of all kinds. Yum. Since it's just a few houses up, no worries about who had to drive home after a bit of champagne! And we got to meet and get to know a lot of our neighbors who were also at the party. Here's a few pictures from that event.

Lastly, we had another invitation (can I just say how wonderful it was to not have to cook all weekend - thanks to everyone who fed us!) to Mike and Margarita's house for supper with Mike's folks, who were in town visiting. We enjoyed a delicious meal and lots of nice visiting with them - their other son, Alex, has two kiddos who were born within weeks of our own kids so they are pretty good at holding babies and hanging out with toddlers.

It was a great and busy time and DC is certainly in full-on spring mode, so it's been beautiful too.
